The Singing Torah is a tool for Jewish religious educators to enhance the learning experience of bar mitzvah students learning the art of Jewish Cantillation (trope). Although it can be used by an individual student either in conjunction with personal tutoring or for self-study, we strongly recommend finding a human tutor who will use the software as a integral part of their teaching.
In contrast to modern western learning, Jewish learning is not silent. Classical Jewish learning has been a tradition passed from teacher to student. Jewish learning is oral learning with the teacher, the text, and with fellow students. Jewish learning is song -- helping memory and transmission. Singing the torah brings the Masoretic Text alive. It enables an enhanced depth and accuracy of understanding.
The Torah (ancient Hebrew Bible) is the fundamental authoratative work that our tradition teaches lays the foundation for all religious interpretation. Some view the Torah as a book of laws of how to live our lives. Others see it as stories of commandments with divine reward and retribution. Or, it teaches us who we are and where we came from, and our experiences with the divine in ancient history.
